Carlos Acosta wants Woolwich studio to become global landmark

Carlos Acosta Aims to Establish a Global Dance Hub with a Local Touch

Carlos Acosta, renowned former star of the Royal Ballet, envisions his newly established studio to not only become a hub for dance excellence worldwide but also a cherished local asset. The Acosta Dance Foundation (ADF), his arts education charity, has strategically chosen Woolwich as its global headquarters, housing a remarkable five dance studios. The mission is clear: to impart a diverse range of dance styles from around the globe while fostering a sense of ownership within the community.

Intriguingly, Acosta’s choice of locating the center in Woolwich, a part of south-east London, stems from a profound reason. With a significant population boasting African heritage in the area, he aims to ensure that the Acosta Dance Centre at Royal Arsenal becomes more than just a physical space – it should be a cultural sanctuary for the locals.

At 50 years of age and currently serving as the director of the Birmingham Royal Ballet, the Cuban-born luminary aspires to craft an inclusive dance ecosystem. He acknowledges that presently, certain members of the local community might not perceive the space as entirely their own. Acosta seeks to change that narrative, making the Acosta Dance Centre a place where every individual can feel a deep sense of belonging.

Among the array of dances scheduled to be taught at the center, Acosta highlights the significance of Afro-Cuban dance and Afro-Cuban beats, along with other popular dance forms that resonate with the heritage of Africa. His vision is rooted in celebrating diversity and facilitating an enriching exchange of cultures.

Carlos Acosta’s ambition extends beyond just imparting dance steps; it’s about crafting an environment where the rhythmic movements tell stories, bridge gaps, and uplift communities. As his legacy extends from the Royal Ballet to nurturing local and global talent, he aims to cultivate a space where dance becomes a universal language, uniting people from all walks of life.
